Vendor Spotlight: Make-up & Hair by Emily Johnson

Happy Bride Friday! As a bride, feeling beautiful is an important part of your day. We are happy to feature Make-up & Hair by Emily! We recently had the pleasure of working with Emily on a super secret project.(Now you’re curious aren’t you?) Emily’s looks are sure to make any bride feel like a princess for her big day!

What is your name, your business name, and how long have you been in business?

Emily Johnson. My business name is registered under Makeup & Hair by Emily.  I have been styling hair & makeup for 2 years.

What does your business desire to bring?

My mission:  I use professional makeup design and styling to leave you looking beautiful and feeling confident from the outside in.

What is something you’re most proud of?

When photographers contact me to share how impressed they were with my work.  Many photographers have complimented me by letting me know they did not have to retouch any photos because the makeup and hair was flawless.

How would you describe your style?

Classic looks with a fashion forward influence.  I strive to stay current with hair & makeup styles from all aspects of the beauty industry (wedding, fashion, film).

What is your favorite thing about weddings?

Creating gorgeous brides and watching them look in the mirror and smile before they become a Mrs.  I love interacting with the bride and  her bridal party and feeling all of the excitement with them.

Any hilarious business stories?

A while back I got to work with a local Girl Scouts troop while they were on a tour of the backstage at the Miss California pageant.  After the tour, I met the girls at a local art museum and gave a small talk about fashion and how I create different looks.  Some of the questions they asked were quite funny to me such as, “Do you do Kim Karashian’s makeup?!” and “Is black lipstick a good color?” After the question and answer session, I was then honored to do the hair & makeup for the young girls before they went to watch the pageant.   Watching their excitement brought a smile to my face.  I am a former elementary school teacher and it reminded me how much I love working with children.

You are on a deserted island and can take 3 things with you: What do you take?

Tinted moisturizer with an SPF, Kheil’s chapstick and my fiancé.

Emily’s work also includes Beauty and FX.

At the end of Emily’s e-mails she has this quote:

“Beauty is not only what we see, but what we feel.”

raquel + jake {strawberries&almonds}

Posh & Posy is proud to present our lovely couple, Raquel & Jake!

Your names?

Raquel Mirelez and  Jacob “Jake” Hagopian

How did you meet? First impressions?

Jake and I were 10 years old the first time we “met.” We were on the same soccer team together. Although I don’t remember much, Jake claims he remembers me. After the season was over I did not see Jake again until I moved schools in the 6th grade. We were in the same class together. It during this time that I developed a crush on Jake, I thought he was so cute and very smart. Jake moved schools after that year and we met up again in high school. Our Junior year was the year our friendship started growing into something greater. We had AP English and Leadership together where we were seated by each other. It was during this time that we got to know each other on a deeper level and we officially became a couple at our Junior Prom in 2005 and we have been together ever since!

Since we have known each other since we were 10 I can’t really think of my first impression but I can say Jake has always been very smart, artistic, he is very family-oriented, he is a true gentleman, he has a passion for everything he does, he is so easy-going, ambitious, driven and a damn good race car driver!

 How did he propose?

I just graduated from Fresno State the summer of 2010. I landed a really big internship and needed to head to Oakland for an Orientation. Jake suggested going a day earlier to spend the day and night in San Francisco. I thought this was a great idea, I absolutely love SF! So, we left early in the morning on June 7, 2010. The weather in SF was perfect! We did a little shopping and randomly drove all around SF in search of great sightseeing views.  Little did I know that Jake was looking for the perfect spot. I just thought we were going with the flow and exploring was SF has to offer.

Eventually we ended up at Hendrik Point. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge was breathtaking and the weather was perfect. Jake stood behind me with his arms wrapped around me and we just enjoyed the view. Next thing I hear is Jake calling my name, I turn around and Jake was down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said “YES!” Moments later, Jake told me that he had asked my parents for permission months before hand. He was waiting for the perfect opportunity to ask me. I’ll admit, I did cry a little when I heard that my parents gave us their blessing. It was the perfect day, the perfect moment and I am lucky to have such a perfect, loving, and thoughtful fiancé.

When and where are you getting married?

The BIG day will be held at Una Bella Giornata at Cardella Winery in Mendota, California on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Six O’clock in the evening.

Throughout the engagement/wedding process, what has been your favorite part?

My favorite part/moment of being engaged is when Jake, his parents, and my parents organized an Engagement Dinner Party in one day! While I was in orientation the day after we became engaged, Jake was calling and organizing the entire Engagement Party from a coffee shop in SF. With the help of our families, I was completely surprised seeing our family and closest friends there in Jake’s dad’s back yard celebrating our engagement.

My favorite parts of the wedding process have to be finding THE dress; and, with the help of Posh and Posy Events, seeing our vision of our ideal wedding come together perfectly!

What words would you use to describe your wedding?

The words that would best describe our wedding would be Romantic Elegance.

Our venue has a romantic, Tuscan feel to it and we really wanted to highlight this amazing place. The venue will be adorned with lots of lace, dim lighting, candlelit lighting, soft floral, an array of pinks (from soft to bright) and an array of metallic silvers (from light to dark).  Posh and Posy Events has introduced us to amazing vendors and play a key role in bringing our vision to life. I am very thankful to have found such an amazing company to work with.

Who took your engagement photos? Tell us about them!

Jennifer of Jennifer Eileen Photography took our amazing engagement pictures. From my first meeting with Jennifer I knew I wanted her to be a part of our big day.  Not only is she amazingly talented she is such an awesome person to be around. Being that Jake and I do not participate in photo shoots quite often, Jennifer and her fiancé, Percy, made us feel comfortable from the beginning. We had lots of laughs and an overall great time taking our engagement pictures.  It has been a pleasure to work with Jennifer. We are very excited for Jennifer to shoot our wedding!

We had two engagement sessions. Initially it was tough to think of a location that represented Jake and I. We are from the country and Jake and his family farms almonds and grapes. Our home is surrounded by almond orchards and my favorite time of year is when these orchards are blooming with the most beautiful white flowers. Our first set of pictures was taken during the time the Almond Orchards were in bloom. I felt this setting was perfect for Jake and I. The pictures were taken in the evening. Our second sets of pictures were taken in the Spring on a slightly warm day.  We have a family friend that allowed us to take pictures in and around his refurbished barn. We also just drove around where we lived and found a railroad track and ended our session there at sunset.

Any cute stories?

Every morning I would pack myself a container of sliced strawberries and eat them in the morning during leadership class. Jake asked one day if he could have some. The next day I brought him a container of sliced strawberries. One of the many times I brought them; he always cleaned the container and gave it to me at the end of the day. I remember one day we were off to a softball and baseball game. Jake tracked me down before we both left to give me my container. I talked to him briefly, wished him good luck, and when I got on the bus I realized he placed a small pink rose inside the container. – This was my very first flower I have ever received from a guy. At that moment I knew our friendship would grow into something greater.

Special thanks to Jennifer Eileen Photography!

Will you be my Bridesmaid?

Hello! It is a lovely, cloudy day outside here in the Central Valley. Lord knows we need the rain!

Today I have a fun, simple “Will you be my Bridesmaid” craft. Many girls buy cards off of Etsy or other sites to ask their girls to be part of the bridal party. So I made my own! I have linked the template I designed for you at the bottom. (For personal use only).

Here is what you need:

-Printed card

-Glue

-Pretty Cardstock

-Knief or Exacto knife.

-Material or Tulle

-Tape

Print out the Template.

Cut a small slit in the center of the frame.

Take Pieces of Tulle or your material and put it through the slit.

Tape the material down on the inside of the card.

Design and cut the top half of the bridesmaid dress. Glue above the slit. (On my first attempt, I glued the top first, but it works better if you glue it after you complete the skirt!)

Trim the skirt!

My recommendation is to take the pretty card stock you used for the top half of the dress to line the left, inside of the card. This will cover the part of the material you have taped! (Not to mention, be super cute)

Make each dress a little different! Your bridesmaids will love the time and effort you put into them.

Lotta Love,

Kati

The inspiration for today’s DIY was inspired by Pink Hearts Paperie.

Secret Garden

“Two things cannot be in one place. Where you tend a rose, my lad, a thistle cannot grow.” -Francis Hodgens Burnett The Secret Garden

And a happy Monday to you all! I am afraid that this Posh and Posy blogger must start school tomorrow. So I hope this ends your Monday on a happy note!

This DIY comes from our Pinterest board of the week with a focus on soft lines and pretty pastels, and flowers! We found this DIY at Christine Chitnis’ lovely little blog.

What you need:

-Terra cotta pots

-Fabric

-Modge Podge

-A brush

Note my cup of coffee and toast with Olallieberry Jam from Lynn’s in Cambria. :)

Take the material and cut it so that it will wrap around the whole pot and leave 3-5 extra inches to fold under the pot. I would recommend tapering your cut of material, based on how skinny the bottom of your pot is. (Mine is quite a bit skinnier at the bottom!)

Take the material and your Modge Podge and start at the top. Wrap the whole upper lip of the pot. Then make cuts on the material to fold over the top of your pot. Take the individual sections, pull tight, and Modge Podge to the pot.

After the top has dried (20 Minutes), flip over your pot. Start from the furthest point from the edge of the material. Begin to Modge Podge and smooth the material down to the bottom, working your way toward the edge of the pot.

Again, cut slits in the material and fold it over the bottom. Allow it to dry! Add some cute ribbon and plant some flowers!

Lotta love,

Kati

Bride Day Friday: Cristen + Jory

Here is a love story for your Friday.

Cristen is a beautiful bride who won tickets from us for the Premier Bride Show last weekend. We are so glad to give them to her. Here is her engagement story:

My Fiancée is from Philadelphia and he was here for the holidays. We had planned a trip to the beach a couple days after Christmas to visit my grandfather in Paso Robles. The day before the proposal he suggested we wake up early and get breakfast somewhere at the beach. I wasn’t too sold on the idea of getting up early, but he seemed like he really wanted to go so I agreed.

He woke me up at about 6:45 am on the morning of the 27th of December and said to be ready by 7:30 because he wanted to start our day early. I thought this was odd especially since it was so early but I went with it, unwillingly at first! It was a really overcast day in Paso Robles so I was sure Pismo would be the same but once we got into San Luis it was gorgeous! The sun was shining on the hills and the water and it was absolutely gorgeous. He drove down by the pier and said he wanted to take a walk and it was then I had a feeling that something was up.

We walked down onto the beach and when we almost got to the water he reminded me of a proposal story of one of our family members at the beach. Before I could say anything he got down on one knee and said, “Will you marry me?!”. I was STUNNED and of course I said, “YES!!” . All of a sudden a photographer came out from under the pier and one came down from the pier because he had hired professional photographers to shoot the whole thing.  It was perfect! We got to have a photo shoot right there on the beach in the gorgeous weather and it couldn’t have been any sweeter.

My surprise didn’t end there. later that night we were supposed to have dinner with my parents and he surprised me with his parents and siblings being there who flew out from Philadelphia! I am so blessed to be marrying my best friend and the man of my dreams!

Cristen and Jory are getting married May 24,2013 at Copper River.

May your day be filled with love, joy and at least one thing that makes you laugh until you cry!

Lotta love,

Kati

DIY Paper Flowers and Tea Stained Fabric

Here at Posh and Posy, we believe in putting 100% into the things we do. Today, I am going to show you how I made some of the flowers on display at our table at the Premier Bride Show yesterday, and give you an insight into how much time and effort we put into our work.

Here is a DIY for the fun paper flowers we made.

We wanted to make these flowers out of sheet music, but it is a shame to ruin actual sheet music. So we took white cardstock, and copied sheet music from a book of popular Bridal music. We then tea stained the paper.

Boil hot water and put 5-6 black tea bags in. Let the tea brew for about 10 minutes. Grab the tea bags and paint your paper. Allow it to air dry!

Here is how I made the flowers. There are plenty of templates online for paper flowers. Print out the template, trace and cut out the petals. Trace the template on the backside of the sheet, so you don’t leave pencil marks on the front!

You need:

- Six petals per small flower

-Scissors

-Double Stick Tape

-Florist wire or pipe cleaners

-Hole Punch

Take a petal and cut an 1.5” slit in the flower.

Take a small piece of double stick tape and put it on the right side of the slit. Take the left side, and fold it over the right. Repeat with each petal.

Then hole punch on the bottoms of each petal.

Take one petal and connect it to the other two, by taking a piece of wire (About 4”) and putting it through the holes and twisting it behind the main petal. Do this with each petal until you have a cute little trio. Repeat the steps and create a second Trio of petals. (Another idea was to use pipe cleaners, which might be easier!)

View from the back, with two petals completed.

Take one of the trios and put it inside the other. It helps to use one or two pieces of double stick tape in order to keep the flowers from moving around after you’ve put them together.

Cut a small circle of paper and tape into the center to cover up your wire.

Your finished flower should look like this.

In order to hang the flowers, I took another long piece of wire (maybe 1.5 feet?) And put it through two of the holes I had punched.

We agreed that these would we adorable (and inexpensive!) to use as wall décor in a baby’s room. OR as the entrance to your aisle!

TEA STAINED FABRIC

We also had some fun fabric which didn’t come in the color we needed. BUT, Amy and I are not the type to give up. So we hand tea stained the fabric we used at the show!

AND, may I just point out that my wonderful parents allow me to do crazy, messy things all the time? Including filling their bathtub with tea?

Make about 10 cups of heavily brewed tea. CLEAN YOUR BATHTUB! Add tea to some hot water in the tub.

Completely soak the fabric and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Go and check the color of your fabric. Then rotate the fabric through the liquid (so you get an even color). Let it sit another 10 minutes and check. The color we got (which we adore!) was very light, but the longer you let it sit, the darker if will be. Keep in mind that natural fabrics, like cotton, will dye more quickly than fibers like polyester. (Ours was Polyester.)

Have your lovely little sister help you ring out the fabric and hang to dry. When the material was slightly damp, I put it in the dryer.

And the result was wonderful!

If you, dear reader, ever have any questions, feel free to comment and I will be sure to respond! Also, if you create your own versions of our DIY, send us a picture and we might feature it on the blog!

We had a blast at the show yesterday and felt so excited about the beautiful brides we met. So many lovely women in one place! Special thanks to everyone who gave us a hand! Until next time!

Lotta love,

Kati

DIY: Bachelorette Favors

There are far too few blogs about bachelorettes. And most of bachelorette parties you attend seem exactly the same. How can one throw a classy bachelorette party? Too much booze and pin the (you know what) is a little old. Here a few fun ideas to keep your party the right mix of classy and scandalous.

1. Jello Shots:

Now, I know you’re all rolling your eyes. But there are plenty of cute/classy ways to make Jello Shots. For our friend, Valerie’s bachelorette, my creative friend, Bacall made Lemon Jello shots. And some other friends (Karen and Natalie) recreated them for our New Years Eve get together.

Here is the recipe and a detailed blog on how to make these delicious shots:

http://www.savoryreviews.com/2010/06/02/lemon-drop-jello-shots/

The end result looks like this:

2. Favors:

For my best friend Bacall’s bachelorette, we hit the town with a scavenger hunt. In order to give our party a sense of unity, instead of pink crowns (totally not Bacall’s style), I made all the girls hair bows. Our party was themed teal and black. Here is a quick demonstration of how to make your own bows:

You need:

Ribbon (different widths and textures)

Glue Gun (A girl’s best friend, next to diamonds of course)

Alligator clips

First, cut your ribbon about 5” long and loop it. Glue ends together.

Do the same with the second ribbon.

Next, cut two pieces of ribbon (5”) and slip knot them. Don’t be afraid to cut this piece too long, it can be easily trimmed.

Pinch together your loop of ribbon.

Center your knot. Wrap one end of your knot around, pinch and glue. (Make sure you pinch it to get that bow feel. Otherwise it may turn out too flat!)

Trim excess ribbon. Then wrap the other side, glue and trim excess ribbon.

Separate your alligator clip, (So you don’t glue the clip together- I have definitely done this before) And glue on your cute little bow!

Here is the result!

3. Dance

For two of the weddings I was in this summer (you ladies know who you are!), for their bachelorette parties we went to a private dance studio where an instructor taught us dance moves. The brides and the rest of the ladies learned some sexy moves (there may have been chairs involved). The bride even learned a sexy dance for her husband. This gave the brides plenty of opportunities to be embarrassed, without having the whole world watch them.

4. The Wedding Day

As fun as the bachelorette is, let’s remember what this party is really about: Her wedding day. Depending on how you end the night, a fun game to play is called, “Wedding Day.” It goes a little something like this:

Write on pieces of paper things the bride needs to do to get ready for her big day. (Right eye, Left eye, powder and blush, lips, Hair, hair accessories, jewelry) Then have each person draw a card. Have the bride sit in a chair. Blindfold the friends as they try to beautify the bride for her wedding day. May I suggest throwing out the traditional pinks for blues and oranges? Liquid eye liner is surprisingly hard to put on someone when you’re blind folded. The result of the game is giggles galore and a picture text to the groom.

May you have many adventures!

Lotta Love,

Kati

DIY: Custom Monograms

Our dear Lead Events Assistant, Katie Burdette,  loves DIY projects, and we do too.  From time to time Katie will share some fun and simple projects you can use to add those personal touches to your weddings. In today’s installment Katie teaches us how to make customized monograms that you would be proud to display in your home after your big day!

Happy Wedding Wednesday! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas filled with friend and family time.  And what would Christmas be without some homemade gifts? Today on the blog we have a simple DIY that is sure to be a hit.

At my friend Jane’s wedding, we made monograms for the dance floor from the paper Mache letters at Joann’s Craft Store. For Jane’s wedding, we took the brown letters and covered them in white paper. Total cost of the craft was about $17.00.

However, on Pinterest (Don’t you love pinterest?!) there is a cute letter covered in photos.

So for Christmas, I decided to make one for my mother.

Here are my tips and tricks!

I got a 23.5 inch letter at Joann’s for $9.99. I then proceeded to choose photos of my family and print them via Walgreens, using their mobile upload (About $6.00). I printed close to twenty pictures. Make sure you don’t print too many of close up photos. Some need to be far away, for the skinnier part of the letter. The example was done in black and white photos; however, I know my mother prefers color photos.

Here is what I learned:

Don’t be afraid to cut off parts of people’s faces! Though it made me nervous to cut people out of pictures, remember that their souls are not in those photos and they don’t even have to know you cut them out!

Print plenty of pictures. Since printing pictures costs cents, better to be over prepared, than underprepared. I printed close to 20, and ended up being one short! (I ended up making a second trip to Walgreens to pick up more prints!)

Step 1: Get your supplies.

~A letter from your local craft store (I choose a B for Burdette)

~Photos

~A glue gun, or modge podge (I used hot glue)

~Time/ patience- From start to finish, 90 minutes, give or take.

~A good movie to watch while you craft (I watched Blind Side with Sandra Bullock.)

Step 2: Lay out your pictures

It helps to push down the pictures and feel the edges of the letter, under the photo to see if it will fit! Concentrate on the skinniest part of the letter first. Pictures that are further away work better on these parts. Next, choose which pictures will be on the corners.

Step 3: Cut

Start cutting and gluing on the most difficult part of the letter. For the B, this was the left hand corners.

Start on one section and work your way up or around. Strategically start and work towards a particular area of the letter (in this case, I started in the corners and worked my way towards the center of the B). Take your photo and push it against the letter so that the edge of the photo folds over the edge of the letter, this will give you a good idea of where to cut. Remember, you can always cut off extra to make the photo fit, but you can’t undo what you’ve already cut! Another technique for cutting letters on the more tricky spots is taking a sharpie pen and drawing on the photo where the edge of the letter is, then making my cut.

Step 4: Get distracted by the movie

DIY projects should be fun and relaxing! Take your time!

Step 5: Glue

Do not glue until you’ve cut every photo. This way, you have the ability to trash last minute photos and replace them or rearrange your pics. I used a hot glue gun with low heat glue sticks. This allowed me to make sure they were secure to the letter and touch/position the photos once I put the glue on. However, you can also use Modge Podge.

Here is my finished letter!

Wouldn’t this be cute to use at a shower or wedding for your guests to see engagement pictures?

Another idea is to get the bride and groom’s first initials as well (like Jane and Scott’s monogram) and put childhood pictures of the bride on her letter and of the groom on his. Then have their engagement pictures on the large letter of their last name!   Happy crafting!

Lotta Love,

Kati Burdette

Thanks, Kati!  Check back on Mondays for more fun DIY projects!
